Website Privacy Notice
This notice describes how Whitwell Publishing handles information collected from visitors to this website. Whitwell Publishing is a family publishing imprint. It does not maintain client accounts, so it has no separate client privacy notice; this is the notice that governs your use of the site.
1. Scope
This Website Privacy Notice describes how Whitwell Publishing (“Whitwell Publishing,” “we,” “us”) handles information collected from visitors to its website at whitwellpublishing.com. Whitwell Publishing is a publishing imprint and is independent of Whitwell & Co., LLC and its affiliated firms; this notice covers only this website.
2. Information we collect from visitors
- Analytics and usage data. We use Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager to understand how the site is used: pages viewed, referring pages, general interaction and event data, and approximate location, associated with an analytics identifier.
- Device and browser data. Standard technical data such as browser type, operating system, device type, and IP address, as processed by our analytics and hosting providers.
- Cookies and similar technologies. See the table in Section 4.
- Information you send us.The site has no forms. If you email us, including through a “notify me” link that opens your email application, we receive your email address and the contents of your message.
- Embedded-media interactions. Some pages, such as the Library of Work, include embedded YouTube videos in privacy-enhanced mode. The player loads with the page and contacts Google and YouTube, but YouTube sets its cookies only after you click to play. The podcast page links out to YouTube rather than embedding a player.
- Third-party book-cover images. The Book List and the David Whitwell Library display book-cover thumbnails served by Amazon, the Internet Archive, and Open Library. Loading these images shares standard request data, such as your IP address, with those hosts.
- Affiliate links. The Book List and some other pages include Amazon affiliate links. If you follow one, you go to Amazon, which applies its own privacy practices.
- Hosting and security data. The site is delivered through a third-party cloud hosting and content-delivery provider, which processes standard request information, such as IP address and browser user agent, to deliver and help secure the site.
3. How we use this information
- To operate, deliver, and secure the website.
- To measure and understand how the site is used, so we can improve its content and performance.
- To respond to messages and requests you send us.
- If you email us to be notified about a forthcoming book or podcast episode, to send you that update. You can ask us to stop at any time by replying.
4. Cookies and similar technologies
The cookies below may be set on the site. The analytics cookies (_ga and _ga_57F1B88N0B) are set on our own domain and are used for Google Analytics; these are the only cookies observed on a normal page load. The YouTube cookies are set by YouTube and, consistent with the privacy-enhanced configuration, only after you click to play an embedded video. Durations are set by the provider and are approximate; a session cookie expires when you close your browser.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google (Google Analytics) | Distinguishes individual visitors (a Google Analytics client identifier). | 2 years | First-party |
_ga_57F1B88N0B | Google (Google Analytics) | Maintains Google Analytics property and session state. | 2 years | First-party |
VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE | Google / YouTube | Player and visitor state for an embedded video. Set only after you click to play. | 6 months | Third-party |
VISITOR_PRIVACY_METADATA | Google / YouTube | Stores video privacy metadata. Set only after you click to play. | 6 months | Third-party |
YSC | Google / YouTube | Session and player state for an embedded video. Set only after you click to play. | Session | Third-party |
__Secure-ROLLOUT_TOKEN | Google / YouTube | Supports feature rollout for the embedded player. Set only after you click to play. | 6 months | Third-party |
__Secure-YNID | Google / YouTube | A Google and YouTube identifier used by the embedded player. Set only after you click to play. | 6 months | Third-party |
The site does not currently use a cookie banner or on-site cookie preference center. The controls available to you are described in Section 7.
5. Service providers and other third parties
We use the following providers to operate the site and respond to messages. Information may be processed by these providers in connection with the services they provide:
- Cloud hosting and content delivery. A third-party provider that hosts and delivers the website.
- Google (Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager). Website analytics and tag management.
- Google and YouTube. Embedded video. YouTube cookies are set only after you click to play.
- Amazon, the Internet Archive, and Open Library. Book-cover images displayed on the Book List and the David Whitwell Library.
- Amazon (affiliate program). Affiliate links from the Book List and some other pages. Amazon applies its own privacy practices when you follow a link.
- Google (Gmail and Google Workspace). Email delivery and handling for messages you send us.
- ActiveCampaign. General automation and email.
Email created in ActiveCampaign is delivered through Google’s mail servers, so Google appears above in more than one role. The site has no signup form; the “notify me” links open your email application to write to us. We do not sell personal information.
6. Retention
We keep the information described in this notice only as long as necessary for the purposes described, and then delete or de-identify it. Google Analytics data is subject to the data-retention period configured in our analytics settings. Information held by our service providers is also subject to those providers’ own retention practices.
7. Your choices and rights
- Cookie controls. You can manage or block cookies through your web browser settings. Because the site does not currently offer a cookie banner or preference center, browser settings and the tools below are the controls available today.
- Google Analytics opt-out. You can opt out of Google Analytics across websites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
- Embedded video. Because embedded YouTube videos set their cookies only after you click to play, you can avoid the related YouTube and Google cookies by not clicking to play.
- Browser privacy signals. We honor browser-based privacy controls, such as Global Privacy Control, where required by applicable law.
- State privacy rights. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your information, or to opt out of certain processing. To exercise any such right, contact us using the details below, and we will respond as applicable law requires.
8. Children
This site is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
